Financial inclusion

We know from our own research and external sources that many people who live in social housing are excluded from the financial benefits readily available to others. One in five people is denied access to mainstream credit from banks and many of those people will live in social housing. They receive none of the benefits of having a bank account – such as savings through direct debit payments, reasonable credit terms – and often have to resort to doorstep lenders for any form of credit.

Southern Housing Group supports a range of initiatives which aim to put our residents in a more favourable financial position. These include:

  • Fair Finance – an East London based non-profit making micro-credit and financial advisory service.
  • Credit Unions – we have supported a number of credit unions both through development and capital funding in London and the South East.
  • Maximising access to the internet.
