‘Wood’ you like to grow your own garden?
Flora, fauna and fun for Timber Wharves residents

Southern Housing Group threw a green-themed fun day that lives up to Timber Wharves Estate’s environmental name on Saturday 12 June 2010. The flora and fauna fun day at the Square, Sherwood Gardens, was an opportunity for Timber Wharves residents to find out more about the support available to grow their own gardens. Southern Housing Group has been awarded funding from Tower Hamlets Council’s Health Town Change for Life programme to implement a community food growing scheme on the estate.
The event was not just for the green-fingered. Southern Housing Group provided family entertainment, including face painting, and children’s entertainer, Mr Mojo, as well as health and well being and gardening stalls.
Project Manager, Dirk Lampe, said:
“The fun day was a great way to encourage residents to talk to us about the possibility of setting up a gardening initiative on the estate. Community gardening enables families to grow healthy fruit and vegetables and helps to promote a sense of community with neighbours. We look forward to exploring opportunities to develop the project with residents.”
