Well done to Alimat Wurie, one of our customers, who recently started a new role with one of the companies we work with, following a work placement with us. We caught up with her to find out how her work placement helped her on her professional journey.
"When I applied for the work placement I was in my second year of university and looking for more office-based experience while I finished my degree," Alimat explains.
She spent four months last summer at the Group's Stamford Hill estate in east London, providing administrative support including helping customers access the estate’s community centre. Her top notch skills meant she was then asked to help the Group’s Love London Working team for six months, providing admin support. The busy team are part of a three year, multi-housing association programme aimed at getting unemployed Londoners into work and Alimat was an invaluable support throughout her time with them.
Juggling a full-time business management degree alongside part time work – including another role with River Island – proved tricky but ultimately rewarding for her: “At times it was exhausting, but after a while I got used to it and remembered to stay positive and manage my time effectively.”
She said: “My time with Southern Housing Group was very informative and eye-opening because I gained so many interpersonal skills and knowledge that guided me throughout my dissertation. I thoroughly enjoyed it.”
A new role with Devonshires
Alimat’s work placement ended not long before Devonshires Solicitors, one of the companies we work with, got in touch with the Group as they were looking for candidates for a six month general office clerk role under the Love London Working programme.
Alimat was up against five other candidates from Southern Housing Group, as well as candidates from other housing associations. After an application process that included submitting her CV, a practice interview with Devonshires, and a formal interview, she was successful and was offered the role in June.
Alimat is confident her work placement with Southern Housing Group was invaluable in helping her gain the experience she needed. She said: “I would tell others considering a work placement to take it as a learning progression and an opportunity to either develop their careers or get back into work.”
Southern Housing Group offers around four paid work placements a year doing administrative work for one of our teams.
