One of the Group's community centres, Alpine Grove in Hackney, recently hosted local MP Meg Hillier who visited the centre to speak with residents about some of the issues they face.
On 16 February, Hackney South MP Meg Hillier was invited to the New Kingshold estate in Hackney, where the Alpine Grove community space is located, as part of an initiative called Our Place, which aims to create a more cohesive local community.
Our Place is supported by Southern Housing Group in partnership with Volunteer Centre Hackney. Its aim is to bring customers together to talk about the challenges they and their communities face and come up with new and innovative solutions to address them in the form of workshops and activities.
Residents spoke with Meg about a wide range of issues their community is experiencing, and the customers she spoke with complimented the Group and Volunteer Centre Hackney for their help in setting up Our Place.
Some of the activities Our Place have hosted include a weekly film club, an arts and crafts group, a six-weekly leadership and development course for women called the Brave Women’s Network, and a parent-led holiday club. Upcoming activities, which will all be delivered by customers, include a legal secretary course, Play Flat (a resident-led stay-and-play session), and a regular bingo club.
Annmarie Nelson, the Group’s Community Partnerships Officer, who played a key part in setting up the partnership, said: “This customer-lead project gives our customers a forum to work together, share experiences, skills, and talents to deliver projects that tackle local issues. This includes social exclusion, mental and physical health, building confidence and skills, and breaking social divides."
John Gleeson, Head of Community Investment North, said: “Too many of our customers face multiple challenges in their daily lives, but it’s really heartening to see how customers in New Kingshold have taken the initiative to develop activities that meet their needs and those of their community. They’ve shown an enormous amount of passion and drive in getting these initiatives up and running, and the great thing is that there’s so much more to come.”
