A recent unannounced government inspection of one of our schemes for older customers on the Isle of Wight has resulted in Southern Housing Group achieving a ‘good’ rating across all five key standards of care.
Byrnhill Grove, a care home for older residents in Ventnor – was recently visited by a Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspector who assessed the scheme on five key standards: safe, effective, caring, responsive, and well-led.
The scheme, which is led by Tina Stuart, Registered Service Manager for Southern Housing Group, achieved a ‘good’ rating in all five standards – an excellent result.
Byrnhill Grove provides personal care for up to 17 older residents with needs associated with advanced age and early stage dementia.
Following the 19 and 25 January inspections, the report found that:
Staff developed caring and positive relationships with people. Staff were sensitive to people's individual choices and treated them with dignity and respect. People were encouraged to be as independent as possible. People and their families told us they felt the home was well-led and were positive about the registered manager who understood the responsibilities of their role.
When we asked a person their views on the service they responded with, "You get a thumbs up from me". Other people's comments included; "The staff are excellent in every way, they are so very good", "This home is excellent, you wouldn't find a better one, the staff do everything I need them to do", and, "I am really happy here, this is my home". A family member told us, "It is a great relief to me that [my loved one] is settled, comfortable and well looked after and the whole ambiance of the place is good".
Along with observing care and support being delivered in communal areas, the inspector spoke with service users, visitors, health and social care professionals, and other members of staff. The inspection also considered care plans and other records related to the management of the home.
The positive result for Byrnhill Grove follows a similarly ‘good’ rating for the Group’s Domiciliary Care Agency, which provides at-home care and support to more than 50 of our customers on the Island.
Naomi Keyte, Head of Sheltered and Care Services for Southern Housing Group, said: “These are fantastic results and great recognition for everyone who works so hard to ensure the success of Byrnhill Grove and our DCA service. I’d like to say a big thank you to our colleagues whose commitment and hard work have ensured our success, especially Tina Stuart”
In a thank you letter to staff members at Byrnhill Grove, one relative wrote: “A very big thank you to all for the wonderful care and attention that you gave to my mother. Every time we visited we were impressed by the high standards and professional manner of all the staff. You all made the last few years so much easier for her.”
