Beauty brand Liz Earle is helping some of our young customers on the Isle of Wight
Southern Housing Group has launched a new initiative in partnership with global beauty brand Liz Earle to support young people living at one of our schemes on the Island.
The scheme, Atkinson House, is a young person’s hostel for eight people. The newly launched partnership will see representatives from Liz Earle work with residents on the property’s garden and teach them about growing their own plants and how best to cultivate the open space.
The partnership was launched on 8 February and invited young residents from some of our schemes on the Island, and staff from both Liz Earle and Southern Housing Group, to prepare the garden as the first stage in its transformation. Around 30 people took part, spending the day clearing existing plants, painting fences, and fixing the greenhouse.
The ongoing partnership will see Liz Earle staff visiting the scheme roughly three to four times a year to make sure residents are on track with their gardening ambitions, including replanting the garden to include a wildlife section, growing vegetables, and creating a sculptured plant bed.
In addition, experts from the botanically-based beauty company will host open days and other educational events at their Ryde-based offices for Southern Housing Group customers living on the Island.
Mark Meredith, community Partnerships Officer for Southern Housing Group, said: “Being able to make the best use of outdoor space is really important, especially with supported housing schemes such as Atkinson House where residents only have one room to themselves. When an outdoor space is inviting and people are encouraged to take ownership of it, they can enjoy the benefits of being outdoors much more. I’m really pleased that experts from Liz Earle are helping us with this.”
Liz Earle are also planning on working with Southern Housing Group to support residents at Byrnhill Grove, a registered care home for the elderly, later in the year.
The idea for the partnership began during Southern Housing Group’s Supported Involvement Day in September 2016, which representatives from Liz Earle attended. The annual event celebrates the Group’s supported customers who live on the Island and the staff members who help them.
