One of our schemes on the Isle of Wight, Whitmore Court, recently hosted the Celebrating Age Festival, which invited older residents of the Island and their friends and families to learn more about the local services available to them.
The free event, held on 3 October, was organised by Community Partnerships Officer for Southern Housing Group, Mark Meredith, and Day Activities Coordinator Elaine Sheldrake, and was held in partnership with Age UK Isle of Wight.
The event was part of the Island-wide Celebrating Age Week, headed by Age UK Isle of Wight, and part of the five-year Age Friendly Island programme.
Mark said: “Those who took part were impressed at what support was out there. Not many realised how much they could access from different organisations, which is a lesson to us all in how we’re not getting the message across.
“One really good outcome of the day was that we were able to advise someone who came in who wasn’t sure how to access support, what sheltered housing was, or that she could qualify for it. We were also able to explain Island Homefinder, the local system of allocating social housing, to several people.”
Around 18 residents and a similar number of interested members of the public took part in the day’s events, and organisations that took part included the Alzheimer’s Society, West Wight Sports and Community Centre, Action on Hearing Loss, and the Good Neighbours Scheme.
