Gardening Neighbours sows success at Landguard Road
The Group’s Gardening Neighbours grant scheme has proved a hit among customers since its launch in March. Customers Deb and Robin, who live in Shanklin on the Isle of Wight, recently transformed part of their scheme with help from Gardening Neighbours.
Gardening Neighbours awards customers with grants of up to £500 to help them improve their communities through gardening projects.
Deb and Robin live at Landguard Road, one of our schemes on the Island, and they applied for a Gardening Neighbours grant to help them improve their outside communal area. With help from friends, family and neighbours, the space has been transformed from a neglected patch of grass to a vibrant and inviting space for residents.
Home Services Manager Donna Bullock worked with Deb and Robin to ensure the success of their project. She says:
Robin did a horticultural course many moons ago, and Deb and her handy husband Wayne teamed up with some of their neighbours to plant all the border areas and put up hanging baskets and garden ornaments. They’ve worked really hard and even painted all the handrails and lamppost to match the communal seating area, which all the neighbours take advantage of on sunny Isle of Wight days!
They also bought a popup greenhouse and a compost unit and water butt for everyone to use on the new vegetable and fruit patches behind the seating area. They’re now growing tomatoes, strawberries, lettuce, watercress, herbs, and fruit. Their efforts are amazing and they both remarked how Gardening Neighbours is a fantastic way to bring together friends and neighbours.
