Looking for a home
Making lives better
Participants took part in informal training sessions with volunteers from CDW, an IT company who are contracted through Southern Housing Group’s IT Team.
Each of the five residents who took part were paired with a volunteer from CDW for one-to-one lessons on how to use their devices they’d brought with them (such as a smartphone, tablet or laptop). Participants also set themselves goals for the day, which included:
The event was organised as part of the Group’s social value programme, which requires the companies who work for us to provide additional benefits for our customers (for example, through training or employment opportunities, supporting customers with their health and wellbeing, or enhancing the communities in which our customers live).
The Group’s IT Team played a key role in helping arrange the event, which was organised by Community Partnerships Officer, Annmarie Nelson, and Digital Skills Development Officer, Rasna Khanom.
“The internet has transformed how we work, keep in touch, find information and spend our leisure time, but not everyone has the skills and confidence to use the internet. Residents here said they felt pressured to keep up with changing technology and get online, but they didn’t have the know-how to make good use of new technology. We thought it would be a good idea to make use of CDW’s expertise and skills to help some of our customers at Vanston Place.
“Learning one-on-one was very effective as participants could learn at their own pace and then practice what they’d learnt. Everyone who took part really engaged with CDW volunteers and have requested another digital skills workshop.”
One resident who took part said: “There’s so much you can do on the internet! It wasn’t as difficult as I had imagined.”
