Looking for a home
Making lives better
One of our customers, Shelly, recently got back into work through a new role with Durkan. After getting an honours degree in computing and information technology in Jamaica, where she’s from, she briefly worked in this field before moving to the UK two years ago.
Having spent a few months looking after my children, I decided I’d like to get back into the workplace. I saw an advert in Southern Housing Group’s residents’ newsletter for an administrative role with Durkan at their Barking and Dagenham site. As my husband works in construction, I was intrigued as to what the role involved so I applied, and a few days later was offered the job.
The Durkan team are amazing to work with and I love the interaction I have with people on a day to day basis.
Simon Walsh, Senior Resident Liaison Officer at Durkan, said: “Shelly has become an instrumental part of our team helping to deliver our refurbishment programme here in Barking and Dagenham. We are thrilled she chose to join us.”
Kevin O’Connor, Head of Social Responsibility and Inclusion for Durkan, who interviewed Shelly for her role, said: “Social value is firmly embedded in all the projects Durkan undertakes to create opportunities within the communities we work in. Our work around social value includes training, apprenticeships and employment opportunities, and Shelly is a great example of how we can help in the areas we work in.”
Durkan has undertaken a large refurbishment project to improve hundreds of tenanted homes in the Barking and Dagenham area. To celebrate completing their 500th refurbished home, they are donating £500 to local disability charity DABD, and Shelly has been asked to present the cheque to the charity.
