Today marks the world’s third Global Recycling Day!
Global Recycling Day 2020 encourages people to remember the importance of recycling and to recognise ‘recycling heroes’ across the world.
At Southern Housing Group we are keen to nominate our own #RecyclingHeroes and highlight the amazing work that is carried out by our teams and local communities.
Here are a few things we are particularly proud of:
Recycling. Greener, cleaner, safer
Until now the gardening on our estates has been carried out either by contractors or caretakers. All those lawns and hedge clippings create a lot of green waste which traditionally went to landfill.
When we decided to bring the gardening service in-house it was an ideal opportunity to look at the way we did things, not only to provide better value for money for our customers but also to do our bit for the environment.
2. Teamwork. We work together and do the right thing
We care about Mother Nature; therefore, we are always striving to improve our green spaces and encourage a wider range of plants and animals to populate our estates.
Last year our Estate Care and Sustainability experts teamed up with scientists from the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology (CEH) in Oxford to run a trial event for local residents in Bracknell.
Residents were given a chance to learn more about the wildlife in their area, meet the scientists and brainstorm some ideas as to how they’d like their green spaces to look and feel.
3. Reduced food waste.
We shop smart
Most people tend to buy more food than they need. We encourage our colleagues to make a point to use up all the food they purchased during the last trip to the market before buying more groceries.
We keep our fridge clutter-free
You've probably heard the saying, “out of sight, out of mind.” This rings especially true when it comes to food. We are trying to keep our fridge organized, so we can clearly see foods and know when they were purchased.
We save leftovers
Although many people save excess food from large meals, it is often forgotten in the fridge, then thrown away when it goes off. We encourage our colleagues to store leftovers in a clear glass container, rather than in an opaque container, as it helps ensure you don’t forget the food.
We should always remember to take responsibility for our own recycling habits and work towards a more sustainable future for our planet.
