Like any organisation the way we work is directed by policies. We write our internal policies ourselves but we have to make sure we’re in line with, and responding to, government policy and best practice within our sector.
Our Customer Voice Forum members help us designing our policies and discuss government and sector-wide initiatives.
Government green paper response
The government recently published, ‘A new deal for social housing’ which it claims renews and deepens its commitment to social housing and the people that live in it. This consultation document was announced by the Prime Minister following the tragedy at Grenfell Tower in June last year, which brought the significance of social housing to the attention of the nation.
The green paper contained a number of options and ideas for consultation so we asked our forum members to join us at the government’s consultation event in September.
Mark Scott, a forum member who attended, said:
“The meeting was really interesting and we were asked to give input regarding two items on the Green Paper. I thoroughly enjoyed it and came away feeling that as a housing association SHG was clearly ahead in most things being discussed.”
Meet the minister
The Department of Communities and Local Government asked housing associations to arrange an event for Kit Malthouse, the housing minister to speak to social housing residents. The meeting went ahead in Hastings in October and we asked our forum members if they’d like the chance to attend, meet the minister and customers from other housing providers and discuss policy.
Forum member Peter Owen, went to the event and said:
“It was a good experience and nice to see how other housing associations work as to regards to tenants”
We recently renewed and updated our garage policy to make the process clearer, easier and fairer for our customers.
Once we’d written the policy we surveyed our forum members to make sure the information was clear and set out in a useful and accessible way. This was our most responded to consultation survey so far.
